TANJUNG MALIM, Oct 31 (Bernama) -- Cuepacs has urged the Higher Education Ministry to create a service scheme for public university staff to safeguard the welfare of some 100,000 academic staff, support staff and administrators. Its president Omar Osman said the scheme was necessary as university staff were laggging in aspects like staff transfer, salary and annual leave compared to public sector staff under other ministries."It is time that a scheme is created to coordinate things like facilities as some universities enjoy them while others have to refer to the Public Service Department circular. The university staff are not getting equal rights," he told reporters here Friday.Omar who is also president of the Affiliation of Malaysian University Staff Union (Gakum) said of the 100,000 public university staff, 45,000 were support staff, 10,000 administrators and over 30,000 academic staff. He said Cuepacs wanted academic and support staff in Universiti Malaya, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Sains Malaysia and Universiti Putra Malaysia be given a special incentive of RM500-RM1,000 per month. The incentive proposed was deemed reasonable as the staff were burdened with lots of research work aimed at enhancing their quality."The research work is heavy and need team work, not individuals. As such, the entire staff involved should be given a special incentive," he added.-- BERNAMA
